On May 26-30, 2019 an important international annual event for representatives of all dairy market segments took place in Saint-Petersburg – Dairy Olympics. This year’s slogan was “Global Dairy”. The main goal of the event was to assess existing risks for the industry, prediction of potential trends, identification and search of the industry’s new opportunities
MEGAMIX Feed Company became a partner of the business program and invited Ermanno Melli (CEO&CTO at RUM&N Sas), an expert from Italy, to the event giving the participants an opportunity to learn about cattle nutrition key trends. Melli believes that there is no single nutrition trend both from the nutritional and economic standpoint, and he highlights the following aspects as the most crucial: increasing the share of in-house feed production in order to reduce purchase costs; diet nutrition management based on metabolizable protein, not crude one; reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; and focus on production impact on ecology.
On May 28 during the conference “How to Produce High-Quality Milk?” Ermanno Melli reported on how to feed high-yielding cows to get milk for cheese production. The expert believes that high-quality cheese can be produced in Russia: “Feeding strategies will depend on the type of produced cheese (fresh cheese, cheese with long shelf life). Milk fat and protein content and quality are crucial but the type of cheese you want to produce is also significant.”
On May 29-30 during the workshop “Successful Farmer” Ermanno Melli presented NDS Professional: participants were able to get acquainted with and test the program for cow nutrition diet optimization and farm management. NDS Professional was designed by RUM&N (Italy) in collaboration with Cornell University using latest knowledge in the area of ruminant nutrition and management.
