An essential amino acid for cats.
By its chemical nature, taurine is a derivative of cysteine. Its role in the organism is great. As a component of bile, it is involved in the digestion of fats in the intestine and improves all energy processes in the body. Taurine is also involved in the transmission of nerve impulses, thereby providing anticonvulsant effect. Taurine is necessary to maintain the integrity of the retina which covers the fundus of the eye and on which the image is formed. Taurine concentration in the retina exceeds its blood concentration by 100–400 times. The maximum taurine concentration in animals is observed in the heart muscle and retina (up to 50 % of all free amino acids). Back in 1975, a prolonged taurine deficiency was found to cause progressive retinal degeneration in animals which led to blindness in less than two years. The correction of the diet makes it possible to stop this process, but its consequences are irreversible. A direct correlation between the lack of taurine and certain heart diseases has been proven as well. Most mammals are capable of taurine synthesize in their bodies. However, in cats, due to their physiological characteristics, this ability is absent, thus taurine is an essential dietary supplement for them.
